Mission Statement
Our mission is to sustain and expand the presence of Education 190, and democratic education in general, in classrooms across America. We believe that this education is a reliable and powerful access to creating positive change in our society, starting with the young people that are our future leaders. Empowering our students with the consciousness and commitment to be active participants in their communities, schools, and governments ultimately gives them what they need to make a real and lasting difference in the world. It is for this reason that we are standing for a future where this education is available to everyone.
Donate to the ED 190 Be The Change Fund
With increasing budget cuts, ED 190 is looking to make itself self-sustainable. Approximately 1,000 students who want to take the class are turned away each year due to lack of funds. Self-sustainability will lead to more classes offered to accommodate all of these students. Donations are tax-deductible.

- Education for Change
- Education 190 is a course designed to promote rigorous inquiry into the current issues facing the education system. In order to fully engage each member of the class, we replace the traditional Teacher-Student model with a democratically structured system conducive to critical dialogue and equal voices. This open space allows students to play an active role in their learning, engage critically with academic texts and their peers, and apply this knowledge through community outreach projects.
Why ED 190 Matters
-Education 190 directly addresses issues of inequity around race, class, gender, disability and sexual orientation, and how students with these identities are impacted in schools. Students of color in particular consistently testify that Ed 190 has been an important space for their personal development, and many have been inspired to become involved in education-related activism.
-Education 190 creates a space for an open dialogue for students through building community and democratic education. It encourages students to take the dialogue outside the classroom into their respective communities, fields and lives.
-Through the community cooperative project requirement, Ed 190 students connect with communities and work in school settings. “Coop” groups identify an issue of inequity in education, and work to remedy it. For many Cal students, this is their first opportunity to work in the world of public schools.
